How did Ahl as-Sunnah wal-Jamāʿah criticize men, books, and sects? What principles did they follow, and on what evidence? In this work, al-ʿAllāmah Rabīʿ al-Madkhalī sets out the methodology of the Salaf in criticism and warning, grounded in the Qur'ān, the Sunnah, and the statements and practice of the Imāms of the Sunnah.
The author shows that clarifying the condition of narrators, warning against innovation and its people, and exposing errors in books are part of naṣīḥah and of protecting the religion. This is the same foundation on which the science of al-jarḥ wat-taʿdīl was built. He also discusses the claim that a critic must always mention a person's good points alongside his errors (al-muwāzanāt). He shows from the practice of the Salaf that this was not their methodology when warning against innovators.
The author is a former Head of the Department of Sunnah at the Islamic University of Madinah, known for his specialization in ḥadīth and in defending the methodology of the Salaf.
